I am going to Cuernavaca, Mexico for three weeks and was wondering what to expect in terms of diet.
u know i’ve been mexican all my life but the dishes that are supposedly traditional…i have never heard of..like the ones that come out on tv…they’re like authentic this and traditional that…i know enchiladas, tacos, menudo and pozole, flautas…people wanna bring out fried banana tamales and crap i never eaten in my life and call it mexican food…lol…
they consist of vitamin ” T ” tortas, tamales, tortillas and tacos.
You dont have to expect anything. You can eat what you want to eat. In cuernavaca there are plenty of restaurants of Mexican, international, chinese, italian, argentinian, etc.. Food. There is a Mc Donald´s, sure a Burger King, Dominoes Pizza, Dunking Douts, etc… So expect to eat what ever your stomach asks for. In the hotels the menus are normally a bit of mexican stuff like enchiladas or carne a la tampiqueña. But normally they offer hamburgers and sanwiches as well….
Of course there are traditional dishes that tourists expect, tacos, tortillas, beans, etc. but big grocery stores sell a variety of international foods that you can prepare for yourself. Mexicans don’t often eat out in restaurants and the best traditional foods are prepared at home. Find some Mexican friends and hint you’d like a home cooked meal.
Just as You joo said, you can get whatever you want.
But you sould try mexican food, it really is delicious.
You can try the “Chiles en Nogada”, those are the pepper (chile poblano), filled with meat, and with sauce made of nuts, cream and pomegranate. Those are not so hot always, but ask- the sauce is even kind of sweet.
You can try some “Empanadas de Huitlacoche” wich are tortillas with the fongus of the corn, or empanadas de Flor de calabaza wich are leafs of a plant, both of them are really really delicious.
You can get some enchiladas suizas, wich are the tortillas with a green souce, they are never so hot. Or if you don’t like the pepper, you can try the Tacos de Pollo, wich are the tortilla with Chicken, and covered by some cream and lettuce.
In the typical mexican diet you can see almost anything, we use vegetables, fruits, a lot, we use to have chile in many of our stew. We use a lot the tomato, and the letucce. We eat all kinds of meat, and you can get an steak almost in any restaurant, but you have to try it in a Tortilla with sauce.
In the morning we have egss, juice, milk, bread or cereal, just as you do, but you have to try the Chilaquiles wich are tortillas with sause, and cream, and cheese. But if you can go to a buffet, they always have everything – you can try a little portion of chilaquiles with the eggs.
You can find pretty good breakfast buffet on the big and comercial hotels restaurants, like a holliday inn, that always work!!
Bon apetite!
